Carroll track is looking forward to the City League track meet this Friday at Northwest High School. Top prospects are the girls’ 400 relay team and the pole vaulters.
The girls 4×1 team consists of Kaylor Nordhus, Kylee Mernagh, Heidi Assmusen, and Daesha Howard. The team is on the brink of breaking the school record in the relay race and they are very excited to complete such a task.
“I really think if we all run well and have solid handoffs we can do it,” Nordhus said.
The sprinting coach, Chris Jaax, is optimistic about the team achieving its goal of breaking the record.
“I expect the girls to run well and I know they can break the record,” Jaax said.
The team will be competing against some of the top 4×1 teams in the state. This should help them to run faster and break the record.
Aside from the girls 4×1 team, stealing the show will likely be the pole vaulters. At the City League meet, the pole vault runway and pit are on a raised platform in the center of the field. This is because is previous years, certain amazing pole vaulters (Carroll’s own Nick Meyer) have vaulted for such a long time that they lost daylight and were unable to see the runway due to the lack of lighting behind the bleachers, where the pit used to be.
For this year, Carroll’s standout vaulters include Luke Powell, Caitlin Hawk, and Anna Dold. Powell is confident and excited for the meet.
“I think if I’m not being foolish I should do all right,” Powell said. “I just hope I don’t fall off the runway.”
The girls track team has won the City League meet for the past four years.
