Bishop Carroll staff and students should anticipate further drills with “intruders” in different areas of the building.
The school had its first armed-intruder drill on Thursday.
“I think it went well for our first practice of actually trying to simulate an intruder and leave the building. I think we need to practice intruders in different areas, while realizing nothing can actually prepare us for situation like that,” Principal Vanessa Harshberger said.
Her biggest concern was the fact that the entire school left the building, including the students that were in the most dangerous area. The “intruder” was announced to be in the commons area, the area closest to the entry ways of 100 and 200 halls. After the evacuation, Harshberger posed the question: would students in that area really have evacuated?
She said Bishop Carroll will have more intruder alert drills, though they will also come with a warning. The administration just wants all students to feel safe and know that in the event that something like this may happen, everyone is prepared.
“Fire drills, tornado drills- students have had these since they were in Kindergarten. These intruder drills are relatively new and we don’t want to scare students or parents”, commented Principal Mrs. Harshberger.
Sophomore Allison Morgan was one of about 1,100 students who left the building when the drill started at the start of second hour.
“I think students should have taken the drill more seriously, but other than that, the drill went well. I’m thankful they are warning us, because it was still frightening even though I knew we were all safe,” she said.
