Last night was one of the most eventful nights of Homecoming Week. Everyone was pumped for the Powder puff game, but many were also excited for the Open Mic Night.

This year was different than previous years, though, because of the weather. Instead of the typical bonfire to accompany the outside performances, this year’s Open Mic Night was held in the auditorium.

There were mixed reviews from students on the change. However, it seemed to be a mostly positive alteration.

Sophomore Monica Carrillo said, “I enjoyed last year’s a lot because I enjoyed being in front of the bonfire, but this year was cool because it was a lot more of paying attention to the singers.”

However, Junior Laura Martin said she prefers the outside bonfire. “When you’re outside and you sway with everyone, it’s just the atmosphere [that makes it better].”

The audience seemed to respond positively to being indoors. Many even got out their phone lights and waved them to the beat of the music during performances.

In terms of the veteran performers’ thoughts on the change, they seemed to have mostly positive comments as well.

Emily Landon, junior, and second time performer, said, “It was very different seeing that many students in the auditorium. The energy was so fun and exciting, it was super awesome to get up there along with my friends and just do what I love.”

Four time performer Grace Leonard said of her experience, “Singing in the auditorium this year was really special. The crowd actually paid attention to us this year, which was nice…I’ve always loved the bonfire. It’s kind of been a milestone for me to look back and see my progress as an artist. I love being able to share my love and passion with everyone at Carroll. Love you guys!”

The night was a success for first time attendees, the freshmen, as well. Freshman Heidi Lubbers said, “I think it was pretty great. It’s a new experience to see people open up to singing in front of everyone. It inspires me and I kind of want to do it when I’m older, hopefully.”

When the night came to a close, Miss Johnsen, Homecoming Week Coordinator, was pleased with the outcome. “I thought it was really good. It was nice that we could still have it, regardless of the weather. I think a lot of people were more focused and attentive and respectful to all of the talent that we saw tonight.”
