This Week in Sports: Bakers, Buzzer-Beaters, and More

Carroll boys bowling after receiving their first place medals last Saturday

Dillon Malone, Sports Editor

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. I hope everyone had a good Christmas break and spent some quality time with their families. Quite a lot has happened in the sports world since the middle of December, and I’ve selected some of the more noteworthy stories from the last month or so.

Bakers

Excuse my bias, but I still think this is the coolest Carroll sports story of the winter season so far: The boys bowling team won the Bishop Carroll Baker Bowling Classic for the first time in the tournament’s 12-year history. Being a part of that team, and the fact that we beat Northwest in the finals, was amazing. The team had the most chemistry of any bowling team I have ever bowled on. We look to carry that momentum into the West Acres Cup. Girls also competed on Saturday and took eighth out of 20-some teams. Due to the storm yesterday, the boys portion of the West Acres Cup will be today with the girls at 2 p.m. The West Acres Cup is all the teams who practice at West Acres; so we will be going up against Andale, Goddard Eisenhower, Goddard, Maize, Maize South, and Wichita Northwest.

Buzzer-Beater

Right before Christmas break, the boys basketball team was taking on Israel Barnes and the Southeast Golden Buffaloes on Saturday. The game was coming down to the wire and Brenyn St. Vrain grabs a missed shot, pulls up from the top of the key, and drains a three-point shot as time expires, leading Carroll to a 55-53 victory. The boys basketball team is currently 4-4 with a game tonight in Charles Koch Arena against Arkansas City at 5. The girls are 7-1 with a game against Andover Central in Koch Arena tomorrow at roughly 3:15 in the afternoon. Good luck to both teams this weekend.
