Week-In-Review #8: A Pair of Impressive Wins Send The Golden Eagles Soaring Into Substate
March 2, 2021
The 17-2 Golden Eagles were able to put together yet another successful week as they now leap head first into the 2021 postseason. The Golden Eagles were able to come out on top in outings against the 2-19 North Redskins, as well as a season-ending matchup against the 13-7 Heights Falcons.
With these two wins, the Golden Eagle win streak is now extended to 15 games, definitely an extremely impressive feat for this year’s crop of Golden Eagles led by head coach Mike Domnick.
With the win against Heights, the Golden Eagles now have home field advantage throughout this week’s substate tournament bracket. The hard work that this team displayed all year will no doubt be one of the many things that will set this team apart over the course of the team’s postseason run.
2/22: Win vs North 58>26
The Golden Eagles were able to put together a 32-point victory against the North Redskins last Monday night. The key to the success of the Golden Eagles was their ability to keep consistent pressure on the Redskins. The North Redskins were outscored in the second and third periods by a combined score of 37-14, which was the main component in the Golden Eagles being able to spread out their lead.
The leading scorer on the night for the Golden Eagles was senior guard Enrique Lankford who was able to put up 18 points. Fellow seniors Alex Littlejohn and Carter Reid were also able to put up successful nights, with the duo putting up 13 and 10 points respectively.
2/23: Win vs Heights 51>29
The Golden Eagles were able to put together a very similar performance just 24 hours later against the Heights Falcons. The Golden Eagles were able to put up a field goal percentage of 46%, as well as eight players being able to find their way on the stat sheet. Senior Carter Reid was able to put together the team’s best scoring night with Carter finishing with a solid 16 points, followed not far behind by fellow senior Alex Littlejohn who finished with 13 points.
Going Forward:
With this week’s two big victories, the Golden Eagles are able to enter the playoffs with the aforementioned 15-game win streak, with many of those wins coming by way of blowout victories. The Golden Eagles are entering this week’s substate tournament with all the momentum on their side, which is an extremely scary proposition for the rest of the tournament participants. The Golden Eagles will kick off their playoff run this Wednesday night against the 14-7 Arkansas City Bulldogs. The Golden Eagles will then swiftly turn around for a second round matchup and play the victor of the matchup between Andover and Kapaun Mt. Caramel in the second round.
The Golden Eagles have been extremely successful this year on focusing on one single goal, a state title. This season marks four years since the program’s last title and it has been extremely evident in recent years how much they want to get back to that stage. The Golden Eagles now find themselves in prime position to do just that.
This team just can’t be beat when they are in unison and firing on all cylinders. This is an extremely scary team and I fully expect to see a long and deep playoff run for the 2020-2021 Golden Eagles.
