Game 1: Northwest at BC
Records: Opener for both teams
Last year’s score: 53-7 Northwest
When: 7 p.m. on Friday
BC players to watch: Senior QB Carter Clupny, senior LB Brendan Stonestreet. BC has seven defensive and five offensive starters back.
NW player to watch: Junior dual-threat QB Jaylen Mason, who has offers from KU and Iowa State. Junior LB Johnmichael Fountain.
BC defensive coordinator Jim Nance: “He’s (Northwest quarterback Jaylen Mason) a good quarterback because he can run great and he can throw great. He can beat you with his legs, he can beat you with his arm. He’s a dual threat quarterback in a backfield that has already has two good running backs, so he’s their third threat running. First and foremost every game, we’ve got to stop the run; people are gonna run more than they’re gonna throw. And Coach Martin isn’t gonna throw the ball unless he has to so we gotta stop the run, then you gotta see if you can stop the throw. We’ve gotta be sound, gap responsible and make sure we take care of our responsibilities. Our secondary, our backside, we gotta cover. We’ve gotta know the routes, we gotta jump the routes. Our front line on passing downs has to get pressure and get him making quick decisions and quick decisions.”
What’s at stake: Revenge for BC, after last year’s blowout loss to NW. Both teams want to get off to a good start in the City League race.
