Starting next semester, Bishop Carroll will utilize Aristotle software to monitor students’ laptops, such as what sites they are using and what they search.
The Aristotle program will allow teachers to do multiple things: set time limits on certain websites, lock students’ screens to certain websites, and mirror their screens onto the students’ laptops.
The Aristotle program gives live feedback to the teachers. One major act that the program is going to prevent is keeping students from direct messaging other students, which was becoming a major problem, Principal Dester said.
“There is a temptation if there is nobody watching you. If we’re watching, that temptation leaves, but then you lose the privacy that you… felt like you had before,” Mr. Dester said.
If students begin to find a way around the Aristotle software, they will be called down to the office for their actions, their parents will be notified, and they will receive detention.
The overall parent response to this program has been positve, Mr. Dester said, adding that parents appreciate knowing what their child is doing on their device when they aren’t there to monitor their child.
“They are 100 percent supportive,” Dester said.
